About ISD

Institute for Social Democracy (ISD), came into existence against the backdrop of unprecedented violent conflicts South Asia has witnessed over the last few decades. With an intention to safeguard the thousands of men, women, and children who've fallen victim to this madness, ISD initiates activities amongst them through their key slogan of "Peace, Harmony and Democracy". As the renowned poet, Pablo Neruda says,

"…And one morning all that was burning,
one morning the bonfires
leapt out of the earth
devouring human beings -
and from then on fire,
gunpowder from then on,
and from then on blood.
Bandits with planes and Moors,
Bandits with finger-rings and duchesses,
Bandits with black friars spattering blessings
came through the sky to kill children
and the blood of children ran through the streets
without fuss, like children's blood.
Jackals that the jackals would despise,
stones that the dry thistle would bite on and spit out,
vipers that the vipers would abominate!..."

- An excerpt from "I'm Explaining a Few Things"

ISD, constituted in 2004, developed the approach of 'Composite Heritage' while working for peace, harmony and democracy which completely resonates with our objectives. It is the brainchild of the late Dr. Khurshid Anwar and is used as a tool for conflict transformation and violence prevention.

While working with the instrument of Composite Heritage and Local Capacities for Peace, ISD has continuously tried to enhance dialogue between communities and cultures. We dream of building a society that is based on equality of human beings and mutual respect. Respect for different identities and differences and guarantee of equal political-social rights for every community and section would be a fundamental element of such a society.

Composite Heritage is chosen as a tool, because of the fact that irrespective of caste, religion, and gender; every individual relates to it. Composite Heritage belongs to no individual, it belongs to the masses. It is only then that it is composite.
